The Cowpasture River Preservation Association (CRPA) is the primary non-profit and volunteer organization involved in preservation and conservation education for the watershed. In their own words, the Cowpasture River may well be Virginia’s cleanest river and its crystal clear, cool waters have soothed the souls of residents and visitors alike for centuries. A favorite place for families, campers, and hikers to explore, fisherfolk to angle, and paddlers to float, the river has inspired many people to maintain its pristine character and health through this organization. More details about the structure of the organization can be found at their about us page. https://cowpastureriver.org/about-us/ The CRPA is a citizen-formed, volunteer organization and a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation. A dues-based organization, the CRPA is governed by a 13 member board of directors, elected by the membership. At present, our strategic objectives include educational and water quality monitoring programs, advocacy, fellowship, and outreach. The CRPA has a great watershed map of the Cowpasture which shows the locations of their monitoring stations. I used this map in an earlier post, as it is one of the best watershed maps of the river. In addition to doing citizen science water quality monitoring, the CRPA also publishes a newsletter, hosts arts, music, culture events, and frequently updates it’s website with pertinent information regarding its mission. |
